My Thoughts:
- To be honest, I had absolutely no idea that there was so much to learn about spectrum, specifically radio frequency spectrum (RF spectrum). One of the most eye-opening parts about being in this lab, for me personally, is just how much there is to learn in the world. This space is so niche - aside from throwing around the terms 4G (LTE)/5G, I would have never dug deeper into how everything works, and little did I know that these things are far from simple. Still, I don’t fully understand how wireless networks work lol, but I can manage (sort of). It’s been awesome diving into the world of RF, specifically the cellular side, in addition to doing full-stack work on the SigCap website.
- Started working in the lab with a postdoc in January 2026, and continued over the summer for the Spectrum REU+ Program (where I picked up where I left off from the semester).
- REU+: A great time. My favorite highlight was going on a funded measurement trip to Chicago, where we went all around the Loop taking measurements, carrying around 9-10 phones. Again, I didn’t fully know what we were doing at times, but it was pretty cool to be hands-on, collecting data that would go toward future papers. It was rewarding to be able to utlize the CSV ingestion pipeline I created for SigCap to conduct joint analysis on all the measurements we took.
What I’ve done
- Semester Research: Began working on SigCap. Having ownership and responsibility over the website has been rewarding - it’s satisfying to actually see the changes I make benefit others who use it.
- REU+: My goal for the summer was to integrate measurements taken from other tools (like QualiPoc or NSG) so they could be uploaded into SigCap for joint analysis. I continued working on the website and collaborated with Henry Shao on a research poster.
